Abstract
Assessment of Reading is a mandated course for teacher candidates in an Elementary Education program in South Carolina. In response to ACT 284 (Read to Succeed), several courses were created or revamped to improve the effectiveness of teacher candidates in teaching reading. The Assessment of Reading course challenges senior teacher candidates, a semester from internship, to learn and apply knowledge about reading assessment while working with a struggling reader for eight weeks. This experience provides teacher candidates with a focused opportunity to experience responding to student instructional needs. This article will detail the implementation of systsematic phonics instruction in a teacher education preparation program.
