Abstract
The Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, & Advancement (CERRA) is currently the oldest program of teacher recruitment in the United States. It was established in 1985 by the Commission on Higher Education based on concerns of South Carolina's teacher supply and a need for a centralized place to recruit teachers. The mission of CERRA is to recruit, retain, and advance South Carolina Educators (CERRA, 2022). Currently, the nation faces a critical shortage of male and minority educators, as well as academically gifted students who are attracted to pursuing a degree in the field of education. CERRA is an established program that focuses on actively recruiting and retaining teachers. Its mission has been the outline for developing and implementing programs for middle school, high school, and college students. The programs are targeted as pre-collegiate (middle and high school), pre-service (college), and service (active teachers). Although CERRA serves South Carolina efforts in teacher recruitment, it also serves as a national model for other programs. Three programs which are highlighted in this paper are ProTeam, Teacher Cadet, and Teaching Fellows. These three were selected based on their modeled organization, focus, and impact of the various educational levels in recruiting educators in South Carolina.
