Abstract
This article examines past and current legal cases relating to the importance of the Constitution's First Amendment for public schools and offers guidance to school administrators and teacher educators in South Carolina to help them comply with requirements pertinent to this Amendment. Landmark and other cases are used to define both the freedoms and limits to those freedoms for educators. Three guidelines outline specific administrator responsibilities derived from state laws and court rulings.
