Abstract

The session uses leader presentation, discussion and interactive activities focused on implementing strategies that the educator can use to assist students in their emotional maturation while learning acceptable behaviors. Attendees learn how students develop positive self-images and learn self-compassion through emotion coaching while teaching positive social-skills. The workshop presents critical character development concepts while addressing key topics such as evaluation of students' comprehension of their role in the process; understanding of the emotional maturity of individual students; the importance of de-escalation time; and creating a positive learning experience around a typically negative situation.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Hylen serves as Associate Professor/Coordinator of the Department of Education at Southern Wesleyan University. He has published research on social emotional learning, servant leadership and working with at-risk students. His book, Cultivating Emotional Intelligence: The Five Habits of the Emotion Coach, was released in November 2022. Prior to higher education, he served 28 years in k-12 education. His most extensive work was as an alternative high school principal for students who struggled academically, emotionally and behaviorally. He has a Ph.D. in Educational Policy Studies from the Center for Character Education and Citizenship at the University of Missouri St. Louis.
