Community Sing and Spirituals, February 1955 to January 1956

A collection of several sessions of spirituals recorded at various locations across Saint Helena Island. In their play order: the Penn School Community Sing, January 15, 1956; Nazareth Church, March 20, 1955; Midwives Christmas Party on Saint Helena Island, December 15, 1955; First African Baptist Church, February 20, 1955. The January 1956 Community Sing session includes "Them bones going to rise again," "Fare you well," "Send the Lord," and "Somebody touched me." The March 1955 Nazareth Church session includes "I'm Going to Let it Shine," "How do you do," "I'm going down," "Jesus will never say no," "I heard it in your singing," "Drinking of the wine," "Never said a mumblin word" and ends with a sermon by Reverend Jake Scott. The Midwives Christmas Party in December 1955 includes "Yes, My Lord," "Meet me in Galilee," "Soldier roam back home," "Swing low, sweet chariot," and "I shall not be removed." The February 1955 First African Baptist session includes "Adam in de Garden," "You got the time, make for yourself," "Stand by the window," and "Kingdom in heaven done changed my name."

House Blessing, Part 1

A recording of a traditional house blessing service in the home of Gracie Redick. The songs in this recording include "Let us go in the house of the Lord," "Come by here," "Come and go with me," "Oh how I love Jesus," Doxology, "Come on to me and rest," "Waiting on the Lord," "I am not ashamed on my lord," "This Old House," "I was on my Way to Heaven when Jesus lifted me," "Lord remember me," "Wade in the Water." Identified speakers include Deacon Glover, Deacon King, Sister Gracie Redick, and Reverend R.G. Milton, Deacon Gardner, and Mr. King.

House Blessing, Part 2

A continuation of the house blessing on the home of Grace Redick and recorded by Courtney Siceloff. The recording ends with five songs recorded on January 1955 at the Penn Center. Songs on this portion of the recording include "In the great great land," "Not made by hand," "Highway to heaven," "I'm so glad I'm here (in Jesus name)," "Ain't that a wonder," "It's so hard on me," "Show me the way (come by good Lord)," "Come and go with me," "In that mansion above," "I want Jesus to walk with me," and "Look back and wonder." Named speakers include Brother Edwin, Gracie Redick, and Brother Redick. Some songs are unidentified because of the hand clapping and feet stomping rhythm.

Two recording sessions of spirituals: A single song session at Nazareth Communion Church on March 20, 1955, and Mrs. Anna Days' house on April 14, 1956. The Nazareth Community Session includes an unidentified spiritual and a sermon from Reverend Jake Scott. The Mrs. Anna Days' house session includes "Oh, in my finest hour," "Let me ride, you load the chariot," "Sit down and rest a little while," "When the roll is called," "Time," "I'm going to lay down my body," "Don't you want to go on yonder ship," and "Lay down a little while."
