Description
A collection of several sessions of spirituals recorded at various locations across Saint Helena Island. In their play order: the Penn School Community Sing, January 15, 1956; Nazareth Church, March 20, 1955; Midwives Christmas Party on Saint Helena Island, December 15, 1955; First African Baptist Church, February 20, 1955. The January 1956 Community Sing session includes "Them bones going to rise again," "Fare you well," "Send the Lord," and "Somebody touched me." The March 1955 Nazareth Church session includes "I'm Going to Let it Shine," "How do you do," "I'm going down," "Jesus will never say no," "I heard it in your singing," "Drinking of the wine," "Never said a mumblin word" and ends with a sermon by Reverend Jake Scott. The Midwives Christmas Party in December 1955 includes "Yes, My Lord," "Meet me in Galilee," "Soldier roam back home," "Swing low, sweet chariot," and "I shall not be removed." The February 1955 First African Baptist session includes "Adam in de Garden," "You got the time, make for yourself," "Stand by the window," and "Kingdom in heaven done changed my name."
