Presentation Abstract

This project provides useful information regarding the untold stories of the African American Diaspora of Conway South Carolina. Conway is a town filled with historical significance when it comes to understanding the history of the South Carolina, but the history of Conway and its African American inhabitants can often be simply overlooked compared to other areas of Conway’s history. This project will illustrate how public sites throughout Conway, South Carolina connected to the African American community play a significant role in understanding the local history of not only Conway but Horry County as a whole. Using advanced research methods, such as examining archive databases, analyzing primary and secondary sources, and conducting oral history collection. This project will focus on sites related to African American owned businesses in Conway, schools, and other public institutions. For example, Randy’s Barber Shop, which has been in operation for Fifty-One years and the Whittemore Elementary School, an Ex-Equalization school for African American children, will be a central focus to the project amongst other sites of Conway's African American history. By providing an online interface and suppling the research in a user-friendly way to the public, this project can play a key role in helping individuals understand how important African American history has been in the establishment of Horry County South Carolina.
