Abstract/Description
Wavelets are functions that can be used to represent images. Not only are wavelets used to represent images, they are also used to compress them. Many different types of wavelets are available for compression, however this research focuses on Haar Wavelets. When Haar Wavelets are used for image compression it is possible to obtain a compressed image with no loss of information. However, higher amounts of compression can be achieved by removing some ofthe information using a threshold. The data is analyzed using Haar wavelets, and then a threshold is applied. In our research we have studied a modified technique for applying the threshold. The theoretical background for both Haar Wavelets and the modified thresholding technique will be presented along with a comparison of the modified and the commonly used method for thresholding.
