Presentation Abstract
Myoglobin is an oxygen carrying protein in muscle that allows adaptation to environmental stress regulation of hypoxia, which is the loss of oxygen in tissues to sustain proper function. Studies have indicated that muscles with higher myoglobin expression have enhanced ability to obtain oxygen in situations where hypoxic conditions occur. Building upon the study by Ma et al. (2013) focusing on high-altitude Tibetan antelope and low altitude sheep, myoglobin sequences were compared to determine if there were any significant mutations that led to change in taxa's ability to bind oxygen. This project phylogenetically analyzes seventeen additional sequences of the myoglobin gene to assess adaptations to environmental stress.
