Comments

J.C. Hipp talks about how Woodhouse and faculty were paid by the 14 men who gave $1000 each to guarantee payment. However the funds were raised and the notes were not needed. Survival for the two years after leaving College of Charleston was hard. In 1959 the USC contract was signed with Coastal as the second branch of USC that activated in 1960. James Blanton recruited Hipp to help with building a college here. He sees the future of Coastal growing in land and enrollment. He feels its milestone was getting 4-year status. He was impressed by fundraising results. The referendum was for three mills tax and approved 4 to 1; then one more mill was approved by the Legislative Delegation alone without referendum. At that time one mil produced $20K. Mr. Hipp tells a story of William Kimbel, who had been a basketball player in the Lightning Five, and he pledged $100K if they named the gym in Williams-Brice after him. The stocks he gave raised $120K that enabled finishing the interior seating, etc. The original funding was $250K from the will of Williams-Brice (after grandparents of the Williams Manufacturing Company in Sumter). Mr. Hipp was chair of the Coastal Educational Foundation at that time. Blanton was Chair when the Singleton Building broke ground and Lovell was the Chair when that building was opened. Hipp served on the Commission for 30 years and aside from his church it has been the most gratifying service for him. Funded in part by the Horry County Higher Education Commission.
