Presentation Abstract

Since the founding of Lebanon, this state has been in a near constant condition of unrest, violence and upheaval. Although it has been almost twenty years since the end of the civil war, continuing political, religious, and social quarrels have left the country in a state of negative peace. This research will provide an historical overview of the Lebanese civil war, from the creation of the Lebanese state by the French government until the recent events in 2015. Included is a discussion of events that led to, fueled, and ended the Lebanese civil war as well as efforts to enforce the ceasefire that has largely held since 1990, but which have prevented a long-lasting, conflict transforming peace to take hold.
