    Ten Spirituals from Penn Normal Industrial and Agricultural School

    John A. Silver

    Ten spirituals recorded at the Penn Normal Industrial and Agricultural School (now Penn Center) on St. Helena Island by John A. Silver, who served as Penn's trustee and director. Silver also produced the documentary To Live as Free Men. The recording is labeled as 1942, but no specific date is given for these recordings. These songs could have been sung during Penn School's monthly community sings. The spirituals recorded include "Go Down in the Lonesome Valley," "For Every Time," "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen," "Hideaway, Peter, Hideaway," "Ride on Jesus," "All of my sins he done take them away," "I am Leaning on the Lord," "I'm Gonna Sing a New Song," "I Shall Not Be (Removed)," and "Rise Up Shepherds and Follow."
