Description
William F. (Bill) Davis came to the Wheelwright Auditorium and was interviewed. Mr. Davis was a charter member of the Coastal Educational Foundation, Inc. and served from the beginning in 1954 until 1959. He feels that the fact that the College of Charleston agreed to sponsor a program here was the greatest step toward a college in Horry County, as well as when the University of South Carolina signed a contract with the Foundation. It was overwhelming how the people of Horry County contributed to a campaign to build a college building. He stated that he felt that the Board of Education working with the Merchants Association was the force behind higher education in Horry County. - Mildred Holmes Allen Prince

Bill Davis talks about being the first chairman of the Horry County Board of Education, succeeded by Joseph Holliday. Davis served 29 years on the Horry County Board of Education and 28 years as the chairman. The idea of the college started in the Board then transferred to the Foundation. Monies that came in from the Board of Education. Mr. Davis talks about getting Dr. Woodhouse to direct the center. He was one of the high points. Davis is delighted about the dormitory prospects and it is another step in the right direction. He believes his dreams were not large enough for Coastal; it has exceeded his hopes. He is proud of the education graduates becoming teachers, as well as graduates in other fields. Mr. Davis talks about helping Francis Marion because we gave them the idea of starting a college though they had more legislative power and got it before us. He helped with fundraising. He thinks the college is the best thing that has happened to Horry County. Funded in part by the Horry County Higher Education Commission.
