Description
James P. Stevens served as a South Carolina State Senator for over 20 years. He introduced a bill in the General Assembly to make Coastal Carolina College a four-year college. Catherine Lewis interviews Senator Stevens about his role in growing the profile of the institution at that time.
This interview focuses on Senator Stevens’ life growing up in Loris and Myrtle Beach and his professional life as a practicing lawyer and State Senator. The interview is included in this collection because the only surviving video focuses mostly on his work with Coastal Carolina College. This video clip corresponds with the transcript pages 18-20.
Senator Stevens was posthumously named an Honorary Founder in 2002.

This interview was from 1992, well after the original Founders interviews conducted by Mildred Allen in 1986-87. Catherine Lewis interviews Senator Stevens about Horry County history, as the full transcript shows, but this video clip focuses solely on the history of Coastal Carolina College. This is the only video that can be found from that interview, and it corresponds to the old transcript pages 22-29. It is assumed that there is a missing video file that corresponds to the old transcript pages 1-21, which focuses more on Horry County history. This interview is cataloged in the Horry County Oral History Project: F277 .H67 O73, v.074.
