Description

Mildred Allen, Bill Edmonds, and Pat Parker visited Collins A. Spivey at his office on Main Street, Conway, S.C. Mr. Spivey shared his memories of Coastal Carolina College and its beginning and the years that he was involved 1959 to 1971. He expressed his biggest disappointment was that when the first building was built that it could not be seen from Highway 501 and this still concerns him when traveling on Hwy. 501. - Mildred Holmes Allen Prince

Comments

Collins Spivey talks about the location of the college in that he didn't agree with it set back from Highway 501. It should have been visible from 501. He felt we missed a donation with Mrs. Graves who could have donated over $1M, and we were not included in her will. He felt only 300 enrollment was the tops and didn't think we would grow more. He thinks the dorms will become like boarding houses and there will be "extra" activities that will cause problems. He says we have a good strong country town in Conway. The college grew very fast and he remembers when the Bryan donation came in for the Williams-Brice Gym. He spoke well of Buddy Sasser and Larry Carr. He said he was proud of the college. Funded in part by the Horry County Higher Education Commission.
